The Future Cities Collaborative sprung out of the realisation that there was a need for a civic leaders forum in which Mayors could share learnings and ideas, take collective action on common issues, and do so in an environment removed of partisan influences.

The Future Cities Collaborative was initiated during the Delivering a Sustainable Future City program, undertaken in 2013, where it became evident that there was a need for a forum for city leaders to continue collaboration and peer-to-peer learning surrounding issues of sustainable urban development. The concept of a continuing city network of the Future City Program alumni was developed.

The Future Cities Collaborative will support the implementation of the strategic urban policy devised during the Future Cities Program, support the continued capacity building of program participants, and also create a mechanism to support the transfer of learning to other elected leaders and senior officers within the city, thereby creating a cultural shift in the approaches to and thinking about sustainable development.

The Future City Collaborative was established with the primary role of continuing the promotion of sustainable urban development by supporting city leaders with leadership and strategic management tools; creating a forum in which mayors can share ideas and information; and develop skills and knowledge in building sustainable cities.
